Atlanta will have many Tony Award-winning and nominated musicals to offer in early 2015 at the Alliance Theatre, Fox Theatre and Atlanta Lyric Theatre. Meanwhile, there is also adult entertainment to be found at the Center Stage Theatre.

“Tuck Everlasting”

Date: Jan. 21 through Feb. 22, 2015

This is “a world premiere musical based on the novel by Natalie Babbitt.” Babbitt’s story is a about a girl who finds a family blessed and cursed with immortality. This new take on the tale is a musical. Directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, the Alliance Theater considers this production suitable for children over 10 years old. Tickets range from $30 to $69, while special group rates are available.

“Newsies”
Fox Theatre
660 Peachtree St. N.E.
Atlanta, GA 30308

Date: Jan. 20-25, 2015

This piece of musical theater has been a Broadway hit, after being a financially underwhelming Disney film. Similar to “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” which boasted Julie Andrews, this story works best as a live performance even though the original production is most famous for starring a young Christian Bale. This story revolves around the hand-to-mouth life of young boys making their living by selling newspapers. The very concept of a daily newspaper is becoming antiquated, but the struggle against corruption is timeless. This Tony Award-winning show delivers in the most important way, with memorable songs. The music is great, but seeing the combination of live dancing and singing makes “Newsies” truly memorable.

“Wicked”
Fox Theatre
660 Peachtree St. N.E.
Atlanta, GA 30308
(404) 881-2100

Date: Feb. 18 through March 8, 2015

The Fox Theater will also host “Wicked” this February, another musical hit from Broadway. The title refers to the Wicked Witch of the West, a character from “The Wizard of Oz,” but this version of the story takes the side of the supposed villain. For younger audiences, the hook will be that Idina Menzel of “Frozen” fame was already empowering women through song in the original production years earlier. Before “Let it Go” there was “Defying Gravity,” one of the greatest songs of contemporary Broadway.

This regional premiere of a Tony-nominated musical is the most improbable tale, mostly because it’s a true story. For those unaware of the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, Frank Abagnale was a young prodigy whose talents were in forging and being a con man. There is a cat and mouse chase between the FBI and Abagnale, whose genius allowed him to pass as pilot, doctor, lawyer and more.

“Clubesque”

Date: Jan. 9, 2015

While most of these theater productions are family friendly, “Clubesque” is a decidedly different show. This 18-and-over showcase has a little bit of everything, but only for adults. A combination of burlesque, classic show tunes and contemporary music are aimed at both thrilling and shocking the audience. Unlike Broadway shows, crowd work and spontaneous audience interaction should be expected. The cheapest seats go for $25, while tables and VIP options are also available.
